The number of eye injuries in the workplace that occur in the US is staggering. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), workplace eye injuries are responsible for sending 300,000 people to the hospital every year. Not surprisingly, about 40% of eye injuries that occur on the job happen within the construction, mining and manufacturing industries, although they do often happen in various other fields as well.
In fact, even workers in the leisure and hospitality suffer approximately 1,250 eye injuries on the job each year, and those in the education and health care systems experienced 1,820 eye injuries at work. And these numbers just keep on getting higher.
Whatever the reasons for an increase in eye injuries at work, the fact of the matter are that these injuries are highly dangerous and can affect a person’s vision and quality of life; for the long haul. Not only that, but it costs $300 million every year for occupational eye injuries as far as medical treatment, loss of productivity, and worker’s compensation is concerned.
These injuries can range from simple eye strain to much more serious trauma to the eye that can cause permanent damage, temporary loss of vision, and blindness. Of course, the most important thing those workers can do while on the job are practice safety precautions, and wear protective eyewear where appropriate. Many eye injuries are preventable; in fact, taking the necessary precautions can help prevent over 90% of severe eye injuries.
It doesn’t take much effort to protect the eye from various on-the-job hazards that can lead to serious eye injuries. It’s strongly recommended that workers always have their guard up as far as eye protection is concerned.
Eye and face protection is dealt with in certain standards for many workplace industries, and workers have a right to work in a safe environment. The law requires employers to make sure that their employees are working in a safe workplace, and prohibits employers from taking measures against employees for exercising their rights.
Whenever an eye injury is suffered on the job, workers’ compensation can take effect. Workers’ compensation is essentially a type of insurance that provides wage replacement and medical benefits to those who are injured in the workplace in exchange for the abandonment of the employee’s right to sue the employer for negligence.
